For many, firework displays are a highlight of major sports events’ opening ceremonies. Without real pyrotechnics, would the festive atmosphere be compromised? “It took great determination to cancel the fireworks,” said director Sha Xiaolan, “to demonstrate our environmental values to the world.”

Cancelling real fireworks does not mean reducing splendor. The creative team leveraged digital technologies to deliver audiovisual feasts. “We used 3D animations, AR and more to showcase even more splendid electronic fireworks onscreen and onsite,” Sha said.

Virtual fireworks can be more dazzling than real ones, with aerial views unavailable before. Sha suggested viewers watch the ceremony on TVs or smartphones to fully appreciate the panoramic electronic fireworks, a visual climax of the event.

This tech-powered audiovisual gala conveyed festivity without compromising eco-friendliness, showcasing China’s real actions on green development. It will also set an example for future events.
